Status: Under Construction / Phased Expansion | Location: 2995 W Hickman Rd 50263 Waukee Iowa, USA
Apple Waukee – Building 2 is the second hyperscale data center facility under development on Apple’s expansive 2,000-acre master-planned campus in Waukee, Iowa, located within the rapidly growing Des Moines metropolitan region. As a major expansion of Apple’s long-term infrastructure investment, valued at approximately US$1.375 billion, Building 2 is designed to significantly increase the campus’s computing, storage, and networking capacity to meet the growing demand for cloud services, artificial intelligence (AI), and next-generation digital applications across North America. The facility will complement the capabilities of Building 1 while providing additional scalable infrastructure to support Apple’s expanding ecosystem of cloud-based platforms, including iCloud, Siri, Apple Music, the App Store, Apple Pay, Apple TV+, iMessage, and emerging Apple Intelligence services powered by Private Cloud Compute. Engineered to accommodate high-density computing environments, the data center features modular pod-based architecture that enables efficient deployment, operational flexibility, and future expansion as customer demand continues to grow. Its resilient infrastructure incorporates redundant electrical and mechanical systems, advanced uninterruptible power supply (UPS) technology, standby backup generators, fault-tolerant power distribution, and climate-optimized cooling systems designed to maximize energy efficiency while maintaining optimal operating conditions for modern compute-intensive workloads. The facility is also expected to support advanced AI processing, machine learning, and high-performance computing (HPC) applications that require greater rack densities and enhanced thermal management. Sustainability remains a core design principle, with Building 2 engineered to operate using 100% renewable electricity through regional clean energy procurement and renewable energy initiatives, reinforcing Apple’s global commitment to carbon neutrality and environmentally responsible operations. Comprehensive physical security, including multi-layer access controls, continuous surveillance, environmental monitoring, and advanced fire detection and suppression systems, protects critical infrastructure and customer data. High-capacity fiber connectivity integrates Building 2 with Apple’s nationwide and global cloud infrastructure, enabling resilient, low-latency service delivery and business continuity. As the second major phase of the Waukee campus, Building 2 strengthens Apple’s long-term cloud infrastructure strategy and positions the campus to support future innovations in AI, cloud computing, and digital services while contributing to the continued growth of the Midwest as a key data center region.
