Meta Lulea 300 MW Hyperscale Data Center Sweden

Status: Operational / Under Expansion   |   Location: Datavägen 15, 977 54 Luleå, Norrbotten, Sweden

Project Overview

Meta Luleå Data Center is a major hyperscale data center campus located at Datavägen 15 in Luleå, Norrbotten, Sweden. Operated by Meta, the facility opened in 2013 and became the company's first data center outside the United States, establishing a significant European foundation for Meta's expanding global digital infrastructure network. The campus spans more than 1,000,000 square feet, or approximately 93,000 square meters, across three large server halls designed to accommodate high volumes of computing, storage, and networking equipment. Its location in northern Sweden provides several infrastructure advantages, including a naturally cool climate that supports efficient cooling of high-density IT equipment and access to Sweden's electricity system, which has a substantial renewable energy component. The facility supports critical infrastructure for Meta's major digital platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, while also providing computing capacity for increasingly demanding artificial intelligence and machine learning workloads. The campus forms part of Meta's distributed infrastructure architecture, enabling data processing, content delivery, storage, and application services to operate across geographically separated facilities. Its extensive server capacity allows Meta to scale computing resources in response to growing user activity, digital content volumes, and AI processing requirements. The Luleå facility also benefits from connectivity to European telecommunications and fiber networks, supporting data exchange between Meta's infrastructure locations and users across international markets. Meta has incorporated energy-efficient technologies into the campus, including a cooling approach that takes advantage of Luleå's low ambient temperatures to reduce mechanical cooling requirements. The data center has also contributed to the development of Sweden's northern digital infrastructure ecosystem and strengthened Luleå's position as a location for energy-intensive technology operations. Through its large physical footprint, strategic Nordic location, energy-efficient design, and integration with Meta's global network, the Meta Luleå Data Center remains an important European platform for social media, cloud-scale computing, content delivery, and AI workloads.
