Project Overview

The Sci-Tech Complex, also known as the Sci-Tech Complex Data Center, is North Korea’s central digital information repository and national server facility, located on Ssuk Island in the Taedong River in Rangrang District, Pyongyang. Inaugurated in 2016, the distinctive atom-shaped, 106,600-square-meter complex functions as a major national hub for scientific, technical, and educational information and supports the country’s closed Kwangmyong intranet network. The facility combines a large public e-library with more than 3,000 computer terminals and a centralized server infrastructure designed to store, digitize, manage, and distribute extensive databases to universities, research institutions, factories, schools, and government organizations across North Korea. Its architecture reflects an integration of public information services with centralized digital infrastructure, allowing users to access technical publications, research materials, educational resources, and digitized scientific content through a controlled national network. The complex also incorporates energy-efficient engineering features intended to support continuous operations while reducing conventional energy requirements. Its mechanical infrastructure includes geothermal heating and cooling systems that help regulate temperatures within the building, while solar energy installations contribute supplementary electricity for facility operations. Dedicated grid connections and local power infrastructure provide the primary electricity supply, while diesel-powered backup generators support operational continuity during grid interruptions. These systems are particularly important for maintaining server rooms, networking equipment, climate-control systems, and other critical infrastructure that require stable power. Overall, the Sci-Tech Complex represents a centralized digital infrastructure facility combining data storage, information distribution, public computing, research support, and energy-management systems within North Korea’s national information ecosystem.
