Status: In Planning | Location: Former Kaipola Paper Mill Site, Tehtaankatu 1, Jämsä 42220, Central Finland
Sesterce Jämsä Data Center Campus is a high-density AI supercomputing development located at the former UPM Kaipola paper mill site on Tehtaankatu 1 in Jämsä, Central Finland. Developed by French AI infrastructure provider Sesterce under a reported €10 billion master development plan, the project aims to transform historical industrial land into a major artificial intelligence computing hub. The adaptive-reuse approach gives the former industrial site a new role in Europe's expanding digital infrastructure sector while making use of an established industrial location. The campus is designed to support high-performance computing and AI-intensive workloads, including machine learning, large-scale model training, and advanced computational applications. These workloads require substantial processing capacity, specialized computing hardware, and reliable power infrastructure, making large-scale AI facilities increasingly important to technology companies, research organizations, and cloud service providers. Jämsä offers a strategic location in Finland, where cool climatic conditions, established energy infrastructure, and access to renewable electricity contribute to the country's appeal for data center investment. The project's scale and AI-focused positioning could strengthen Finland's role in Europe's emerging AI infrastructure ecosystem while attracting further technology-related investment to the Central Finland region. Repurposing the former paper mill site also highlights the potential for industrial brownfield locations to support new digital infrastructure developments. Through its planned transformation, Sesterce aims to establish a substantial computing platform capable of serving the growing demand for advanced AI processing and high-density workloads. If delivered at the proposed scale, the Jämsä campus could become a significant addition to Europe's AI data center landscape, connecting Finland's industrial heritage with the infrastructure requirements of next-generation computing.
