FutureGrid Accelerator (Jurong Island Campus)
Status: Launched / Operational (Testbed Phase) | Location: NTU Electrification and Power Grids Centre (EPGC)
Project Overview
The STT GDC FutureGrid Accelerator, launched in late January 2026, represents a pivotal shift in how global data centers approach the dual challenges of massive AI workloads and the urgent need for decarbonization. Located in the high-tech industrial hub of Jurong Island, Singapore, this facility is Southeast Asia’s first live testbed dedicated to High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) integration for AI infrastructure. As generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) push rack densities toward and beyond 100kW per rack, traditional Alternating Current (AC) power distribution faces significant efficiency losses and physical space constraints. The FutureGrid Accelerator addresses this by utilizing a native DC architecture. By eliminating multiple stages of power conversion (AC to DC and back), the facility achieves up to 30% overall energy savings. This is not merely a laboratory experiment; it is a "live" environment where real AI servers are being stressed under maximum workloads to validate a new global blueprint for STT GDC’s portfolio.A key innovation of this project is its partnership with LITEON and the deep-tech spinoff Amperesand. The project integrates Solid State Transformer (SST) technology, which allows the data center to interface directly with medium-voltage grids and renewable energy sources. This "grid-to-chip" DC path reduces the copper footprint by 45% and shrinks the physical power infrastructure by nearly 40%, allowing for more white space to be dedicated to high-density compute.Sustainability is the core driver. The project is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 400 tonnes of $CO_2e$ per megawatt annually. As Singapore maintains strict criteria for new data center builds under its Green Data Center Roadmap, the FutureGrid Accelerator serves as a proof-of-concept for how hyperscalers can meet performance demands while adhering to a PUE target of <1.2. This project cements Singapore's position as a "Living Lab" for the global digital economy, ensuring that the infrastructure supporting the AI revolution is as intelligent as the software running on it.
