Osaka Japan 48MW KDDI TELEHOUSE Osaka Sakai 1 Takumicho AI Colocation Data Center

Status: Operational / Strategic AI Facility   |   Location: 1 Takumicho, Sakai Ward, Osaka, 590-0908, Japan

Project Overview

The TELEHOUSE Osaka Sakai Data Center, also known as the Osaka Sakai AI Data Center, is a high-density, AI-focused hyper-edge facility operated by KDDI Corporation at 1 Takumicho in Sakai Ward, Osaka, Japan. Developed on a repurposed portion of the former Sharp LCD panel manufacturing plant, the four-story facility represents a strategic transformation of existing industrial infrastructure into an advanced digital computing hub. The data center provides 48 MW of critical computing capacity designed to support demanding artificial intelligence workloads, including generative AI development, large language model (LLM) training, inference, machine learning, and advanced industrial automation. Its high-density architecture is intended to accommodate next-generation computing platforms and GPU-intensive deployments that require substantially greater processing and cooling capabilities than conventional enterprise workloads. The facility also strengthens KDDI’s broader AI infrastructure strategy by providing enterprises, technology companies, research organizations, and industrial customers with access to scalable computing resources in the Kansai region. Its location in Sakai provides connectivity to the wider Osaka metropolitan area while leveraging the region’s established telecommunications, industrial, and technology infrastructure. By converting an existing manufacturing site into an AI-oriented data center, the project demonstrates how underutilized industrial assets can be adapted to meet rapidly increasing demand for high-performance digital infrastructure. The Osaka Sakai facility is positioned to play an important role in Japan’s expanding AI ecosystem, supporting the growth of cloud computing, generative AI applications, data-intensive services, and emerging technologies that require reliable, high-density computing capacity.
