Terafab Austin: $25B 2nm AI Chip Factory

Status: Under Construction / Soil Reclamation (April 2026)   |   Location: Austin (Travis County), Texas

Project Overview

Formally unveiled on March 21, 2026, at the Seaholm Power Plant, Terafab represents a $25 billion joint venture aimed at vertically integrating the entire AI semiconductor value chain. Positioned as the world’s first “Full-Stack Fab,” the facility consolidates chip design, advanced lithography, 2nm fabrication, packaging, and testing within a single campus. This integrated model is designed to eliminate reliance on external foundries and directly address the global “foundry bottleneck” impacting high-performance AI chip production.

The fab is engineered to support next-generation compute demands across multiple advanced applications, including Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems, Optimus humanoid robotics, and SpaceX’s orbital AI infrastructure. A defining technical feature is its dual-stream production model: approximately 20% of output is allocated to AI5 and AI6 edge inference chips for terrestrial deployment, while the remaining 80% is dedicated to D3-class radiation-hardened chips optimized for space-based AI satellite networks.
