Project Overview

Avonmouth Data Centre is a proposed 40 MW high-density, AI-ready digital infrastructure facility located on Severn Road in Avonmouth, Bristol, United Kingdom. Jointly developed by UK renewable infrastructure developer Rivington Energy and Viridor Energy, the campus is designed specifically for high-performance artificial intelligence and machine learning workloads requiring substantial power density and advanced thermal management. The facility is planned to support rack densities of up to 144 kW, enabling the deployment of high-density GPU and computing infrastructure associated with demanding AI training, inference, and machine learning applications. A defining feature of the development is its direct power integration with Viridor's behind-the-meter Energy-from-Waste facility, allowing the data center to access continuous baseload electricity generated from residual municipal waste. This power configuration creates a direct relationship between local energy generation and digital infrastructure operations while supporting the facility's requirement for reliable electricity. Designed to Tier III specifications, the campus incorporates resilient infrastructure intended to maintain continuity for critical computing workloads. Direct-to-chip liquid cooling loops are planned to manage the substantial heat generated by high-density AI hardware, providing a cooling architecture suited to elevated rack power requirements. The facility also includes high-count carrier-neutral fiber routes, providing connectivity to regional UK internet exchanges and supporting data transmission between customers, networks, cloud platforms, and broader digital infrastructure. Its location in Avonmouth places the development within an established industrial and energy corridor near Bristol, providing access to existing utility and transportation infrastructure. The combination of 40 MW capacity, high rack-density capability, Energy-from-Waste power integration, liquid cooling, Tier III specifications, and carrier-neutral connectivity creates an infrastructure platform tailored to the increasing requirements of AI and high-performance computing workloads in the UK.
