Status: Announced / Under Development | Location: Greater Cairo Metro Area, Cairo, Egypt
The AWS Middle East South Data Center in Cairo, Egypt, serves as a strategic hyperscale cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence computing facility supporting Amazon Web Services operations across North Africa and surrounding regional markets. Designed to provide scalable, resilient, and low-latency cloud services, the multi-building campus is described as delivering 120 megawatts of total utility capacity and 100 megawatts of critical IT load for cloud computing, high-performance computing, and AI workloads. The electrical infrastructure is supported by dedicated high-voltage grid connections from the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, complemented by modular uninterruptible power supply systems configured in 2N redundant architectures and standby emergency generators designed to maintain operational continuity during grid interruptions. Backup generation systems are engineered for demanding environmental conditions, including Cairo’s high ambient temperatures and arid climate. To support increasingly dense computing environments, the facility incorporates advanced direct-to-chip liquid cooling alongside high-efficiency air-cooling technologies, enabling thermal management for high-performance computing infrastructure and AI systems operating at elevated rack densities. The cooling architecture is intended to improve energy efficiency while maintaining stable operating temperatures for compute-intensive workloads. As a strategically positioned cloud infrastructure hub, the Cairo campus benefits from Egypt’s location between Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, providing access to major terrestrial and subsea telecommunications routes. Its connectivity architecture includes subterranean fiber infrastructure supporting low-latency links toward regional network hubs and subsea cable landing stations along Mediterranean and Red Sea transit corridors. The combination of hyperscale cloud infrastructure, resilient electrical systems, advanced cooling technologies, and strategically positioned connectivity makes the AWS Middle East South facility an important component of the region’s expanding digital infrastructure ecosystem.
