Status: Live / Operational | Location: Science Park, Amsterdam, Netherlands
The launch of Digital Realty AMS11 in December 2025 solidifies Amsterdam's position as a dominant "FLAP" (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris) market leader. Situated in the Amsterdam Science Park, one of the most densely connected spots on the planet, AMS11 is more than just a storage facility—it is a high-speed switching station for global data. With an IT load of 27 MW, it serves as the 12th data center in Digital Realty’s Netherlands portfolio.
Advanced Engineering & Heat Circularity
Technically, AMS11 is a marvel of European sustainability standards. It achieves a PUE of 1.15, among the lowest in the region, by utilizing indirect adiabatic cooling. However, its most innovative feature is its heat recovery system. In collaboration with the city of Amsterdam, the facility captures the thermal energy generated by its servers and pumps it into a district heating network, providing warmth to nearby residential buildings and university facilities. This "circular energy" model was a prerequisite for securing building permits under Amsterdam’s strict data center moratorium rules.
AI-Ready Infrastructure
While Amsterdam is traditionally a "connectivity" hub, AMS11 has been upgraded to support the 2025 demand for Generative AI inference. The facility features modular high-density zones capable of supporting liquid-to-air cooling transitions, allowing clients to deploy racks with power requirements exceeding 50 kW. This makes it an ideal landing spot for European enterprises that need to run large language models (LLMs) closer to their end-users to minimize latency.
Unmatched Connectivity Ecosystem
Connectivity remains the primary draw for AMS11. Being located in the Science Park means direct, "cross-connect" access to the AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange), one of the world's largest internet exchanges. For hyperscalers and financial service firms, this translates to sub-millisecond latency to the rest of Europe. The facility also acts as a primary landing station for several new transatlantic subsea cables, making it a critical bridge between North American cloud regions and European markets.
Meeting Global Sustainability Mandates
AMS11 operates on 100% renewable energy, primarily sourced from Dutch offshore wind farms. Digital Realty has utilized this project to showcase its commitment to the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact. By combining extreme connectivity with a carbon-neutral footprint, AMS11 addresses the dual challenge of growing data demands and the urgent need for environmental responsibility.
