Project Summary

EDC One Pego Abrantes 100MW Hyperscale Data Center

Status: Under Development / Strategic Greenfield Campus   |   Location: Estrada Nacional 118 (EN118), 2205-305 Pego, Abrantes, Portugal

Project Overview

The EDC One Pego, also known as European Data Center One or EDC Pego, is a major hyperscale and AI-ready data center campus development by EDC One (European Data Center) located along Estrada Nacional 118 (EN118) in Pego, within Abrantes Municipality in Portugal’s Santarém District. The project is being developed on the former Pego Coal-Fired Power Plant site, representing a significant industrial transition from legacy fossil fuel infrastructure toward a large-scale digital and technology hub. The location provides a strategic advantage through its substantial pre-existing electrical grid interconnection infrastructure, enabling the campus to support up to 100 MW or more of total IT load capacity as development progresses. EDC One Pego is designed to serve the growing requirements of artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, supercomputing, and hyperscale cloud workloads, with an infrastructure strategy focused on high-density computing environments. The campus is planned to use advanced liquid cooling technologies capable of managing the thermal requirements associated with increasingly dense AI and accelerated computing systems. Sustainability is also central to the development, with the project positioned around the use of 100% renewable energy sourced from regional solar, wind, and green hydrogen generation projects. By repurposing an existing energy infrastructure site, the development can leverage established grid connections and industrial land while supporting Portugal’s broader energy-transition and digital infrastructure objectives. Its location in central Portugal also provides opportunities for connectivity between the campus and major metropolitan and international network hubs, with planned low-latency fiber links connecting the site toward Lisbon and wider European backbone networks. The combination of substantial electrical capacity, renewable energy resources, high-density cooling, and hyperscale-ready design positions EDC One Pego as a potentially important digital infrastructure development for Portugal. The project also demonstrates how former industrial energy sites can be repositioned to support the rapidly expanding demand for AI and cloud computing infrastructure while contributing to the modernization of regional economies.
