EdgeConneX Osaka-Kyoto Data Center Campus

Status: Announced / Planning & Land Lease Secured   |   Location: Greater Osaka-Kyoto Area (Kansai Region), Japan

Project Overview

The EdgeConneX Osaka-Kyoto Campus is a major international investment strategically focused on establishing the Kansai region as a premier destination for hyperscale and AI infrastructure in Japan, complementing the historically dominant Tokyo cluster. With plans for a total capacity exceeding 200 MW of IT load, this campus will be one of the largest data center developments in the Greater Osaka-Kyoto area upon completion of its phases, signalling a decisive commitment to Japan's accelerating digital transformation.

The project is driven by the global trend toward high-density computing, specifically the demanding requirements of AI and High-Performance Computing (HPC) deployments. The design will therefore incorporate state-of-the-art features to manage high heat loads, including provisions for advanced liquid cooling solutions. Given Japan's location, the campus prioritises resilience and disaster preparedness, integrating advanced seismic isolation technologies into its construction to ensure business continuity even during major seismic events. This focus on reliability makes the site highly attractive to large global cloud providers establishing secondary or redundant regions outside of Tokyo.

Economically, Osaka is establishing itself as a standalone hyperscale cloud region, and this 200+ MW campus, backed by investment firm EQT Infrastructure, directly fuels that growth. The facility's target Ready-for-Service (RFS) date in 2027 is timed to capture the next wave of cloud and AI capacity deployment in the country. By partnering with local entities like Kagoya Asset Management for the land lease, EdgeConneX is ensuring its campus is locally integrated while providing the international hyperscale standards necessary to advance Japan's digital infrastructure.
