Project Overview

eThekwini Data Center is a proposed 400 MW high-density artificial intelligence and cloud computing facility planned in Kingsburgh near the mouth of the Lovu River, south of Durban, South Africa. Developed through a public-private partnership between the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality and the South Korea South Power Consortium, the project is planned across a 5-hectare campus and is designed to establish a large-scale AI infrastructure hub serving enterprise, cloud, analytics, and high-performance computing requirements across Southern Africa. The substantial 400 MW capacity provides a platform for energy-intensive AI workloads, advanced data processing, cloud services, and other high-density computing applications. The project benefits from its strategic location near the Amanzimtoti Cable Landing Station, which provides connectivity to the high-capacity 2Africa subsea cable network and supports international data exchange between South Africa and global network corridors. Under the proposed development structure, the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality provides access to the project land, while the South Korea South Power Consortium is responsible for funding the facility buildout. This public-private framework combines municipal land resources with private-sector infrastructure investment to support large-scale digital infrastructure development. The campus is intended to strengthen regional computing capacity while supporting enterprise digital transformation, artificial intelligence adoption, and advanced analytics. Its proximity to Durban also provides access to established transport, telecommunications, industrial, and commercial infrastructure. Through its planned high-density computing capacity, international subsea connectivity, and collaborative development model, the eThekwini Data Center is designed to support the expanding digital infrastructure requirements of South Africa and the wider Southern African region.
