Project Overview

The FCCN SE02/GigaPix Porto Data Center, also known as GigaPIX SE02, is an important research, education and internet exchange infrastructure node operated by FCT-FCCN, the scientific computing unit of Portugal's Foundation for Science and Technology. Located at the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP), Edifício CICA, Sala 102, on Rua Dr. Roberto Frias in Porto, Portugal, the facility serves as a northern interconnection point for GigaPIX, Portugal's non-profit Internet Exchange Point, as well as the RCTSAAI National Research and Education Network. Its strategic role extends beyond conventional data center hosting because the site supports the exchange of internet traffic between Portuguese internet service providers, academic institutions, research organizations, international carriers, cloud platforms and other connected networks. Designed for high availability, the facility incorporates resilient power infrastructure and precision environmental controls to maintain stable operating conditions for network and computing equipment. High-capacity fiber connections link GigaPIX Porto with other FCCN infrastructure, including nodes in Lisbon, providing an important pathway for national research and education traffic. The Porto location also helps improve regional network efficiency by allowing participating organizations in Northern Portugal to exchange local traffic closer to its source rather than routing all traffic through Lisbon. This geographic distribution strengthens network resilience while supporting lower-latency connectivity for universities, research institutions, public-sector organizations and connected service providers.
