Status: Operational / Flagship National Infrastructure Hub | Location: Transversal Rua da Grila 4, 6200-000 Covilhã, Portugal
The MEO Covilhã Data Center, also known as Data Center Altice Covilhã, is a major digital infrastructure facility operated by MEO, the telecommunications and technology division of Altice Portugal, in Covilhã, Portugal. Located at Transversal Rua da Grila 4, the facility serves as an important national hub for cloud computing, data storage, disaster recovery and enterprise digital services. Developed on a site of approximately 75,000 square meters, the campus incorporates around 12,000 square meters of technical whitespace distributed across four modular blocks, allowing infrastructure capacity to be expanded according to customer and workload requirements. The facility was designed around high availability and resilient infrastructure principles, with Tier III and Tier IV equivalent characteristics supporting demanding business-critical workloads. Its position in inland Portugal also provides a strategic alternative to Lisbon's more concentrated digital infrastructure market while maintaining connectivity to national telecommunications networks. MEO's extensive fiber infrastructure links the Covilhã facility with major Portuguese connectivity hubs, supporting low-latency communications and access to enterprise and cloud services. Energy efficiency is another important component of the site's design, with free-cooling technology helping reduce mechanical cooling requirements during suitable weather conditions. Solar generation and efficient thermal-management systems further support the facility's sustainability objectives, while redundant electrical infrastructure is designed to maintain service continuity. The data center has also received LEED Gold sustainability certification, reflecting its focus on efficient resource use and environmentally responsible operations. With its combination of resilient infrastructure, substantial technical capacity, national fiber connectivity, renewable-energy integration and modular expansion capabilities, the MEO Covilhã Data Center remains an important component of Portugal's digital infrastructure ecosystem and supports the country's growing cloud, enterprise and data-intensive technology requirements.
