Project Overview

The FCCN SE03/GigaPix II is a national research, academic, and Internet exchange infrastructure node operated by FCT|FCCN (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia – Unidade FCCN) in Lisbon, Portugal. Located on the first floor of Avenida do Brasil 101, within the Edifício Manuel Rocha on the LNEC campus, the SE03 technical room serves as an important physical point of presence for GigaPIX, Portugal’s non-profit Internet Exchange Point (IXP). The facility plays a key role in supporting the country’s research, education, and digital networking ecosystem by providing an interconnection environment for universities, research and development institutions, public-sector organizations, telecommunications operators, and other participating networks. As an important interconnection anchor for the RCTS (Science, Technology and Society Network), FCCN SE03/GigaPIX II enables participating organizations to exchange traffic directly rather than routing domestic communications through distant international networks. This helps improve network efficiency, reduce latency, and optimize the use of international bandwidth for research and academic applications. The node operates as part of the wider GigaPIX infrastructure, complementing exchange locations in Porto and the broader Lisbon metropolitan area to provide geographically distributed connectivity and network resilience. Its high-capacity optical connections also link the Portuguese research and academic community with GÉANT and other pan-European research networks, while providing pathways toward international telecommunications and cloud infrastructure. The carrier-neutral nature of the exchange environment allows multiple network operators and connected organizations to establish direct peering relationships, supporting efficient traffic exchange and improved access to digital services. Through its integration with RCTS, GigaPIX, and international research backbones, FCCN SE03/GigaPIX II contributes to Portugal’s national digital infrastructure while strengthening Lisbon’s role as a connectivity and research networking hub.
