Project Summary

Google Kajaani AI Data Center Infrastructure Finland Kainuu Hyperscale

Status: Proposed / Land Acquired & Development Planning Phase   |   Location: RyynΓ€sentie, Kajaani, Kainuu Region, Northern Finland

Project Overview

Google Kajaani AI Data Center is a proposed mega-scale greenfield compute campus planned on extensive acquired land parcels along Ryynäsentie in the municipality of Kajaani, Kainuu region, Northern Finland. The project forms part of Google’s €13 billion ($15 billion) two-year investment program to expand Finland’s digital infrastructure and AI computing capacity, alongside planned developments and infrastructure upgrades in Hamina, Muhos, and Vaala. The Kajaani campus is expected to support high-density computing workloads associated with Google Gemini, Google Cloud, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other next-generation digital services. Its location in Northern Finland provides a significant environmental and operational advantage, with the region’s cool subarctic climate offering opportunities for efficient ambient-air cooling and reduced reliance on energy-intensive mechanical cooling systems. The project is also linked to a dedicated 94 MW battery energy storage system (BESS), scheduled to become operational in 2027, strengthening the campus’s energy resilience while supporting stability across Finland’s national electricity network operated by Fingrid. The combination of large-scale computing infrastructure, renewable-energy integration, and grid-support capabilities positions Kajaani as an important potential node in Google’s broader European AI infrastructure strategy. The development could also reinforce Kajaani’s role as an emerging data center location by leveraging Finland’s abundant low-carbon electricity, strong power-grid infrastructure, cool climate, and growing digital ecosystem. As AI workloads continue to drive demand for high-density compute capacity, the proposed campus highlights how hyperscale operators are increasingly combining data center expansion with energy storage, grid flexibility, and climate-based efficiency strategies to support sustainable digital infrastructure growth.
