Project Overview

Google Vaala AI Data Center is a mega-scale greenfield compute campus planned across approximately 900 hectares of land in the municipality of Vaala, North Ostrobothnia, Northern Finland. The development forms part of Google’s flagship €13 billion ($15 billion) Finnish digital and AI infrastructure investment program spanning 2027–2028, designed to expand the company’s European capacity for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and advanced digital services. The Vaala campus is being engineered to support next-generation Google Gemini AI models, machine learning applications, and enterprise cloud workloads that require large amounts of high-performance computing capacity. Its location in Northern Finland provides favorable environmental conditions for data center operations, with the region’s naturally cool subarctic climate enabling efficient ambient-air cooling and helping reduce the energy required for mechanical cooling systems. The project is also aligned with Google’s broader 24/7 carbon-free energy strategy, with planned electricity sourcing supported by 629 MW of domestic wind power purchase agreements and a 22-year nuclear power agreement with Fortum. These long-term power arrangements are intended to provide a reliable, low-carbon electricity foundation as computing demand increases across the campus. Beyond energy efficiency, the development incorporates local biodiversity restoration initiatives, reflecting a wider effort to manage the environmental footprint associated with large-scale digital infrastructure construction. The combination of extensive land availability, low-carbon power, climate-assisted cooling, and environmental restoration positions Vaala as a strategically important component of Google’s Finnish AI infrastructure expansion. The campus could also strengthen Northern Finland’s emerging role as a destination for hyperscale data center investment as demand for AI and cloud computing continues to accelerate.
