Project Overview

The Honeman Close Data Centre, designated as SYD1, is a large-scale hyperscale digital infrastructure development led by Microsoft in partnership with Lehr Consultants International (LCI) and planned for Huntingwood in Greater Western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Located on a 5.04-hectare industrial parcel at 6 Honeman Close, at the corner of Reservoir Road, within the City of Blacktown, the development occupies a strategically important position in Sydney’s established Western industrial and data center corridor. The site is surrounded by major digital infrastructure assets operated by companies including AirTrunk, DCI, and Amazon Web Services, creating access to a mature ecosystem of telecommunications, cloud, and data center infrastructure. Classified as a State Significant Development under SSD-58601963, the project is master-planned around a multi-story dedicated whitespace facility with up to 96.0 MW of total critical IT load capacity. The development is designed to support hyperscale cloud computing, enterprise workloads, and increasingly demanding artificial intelligence and accelerated-computing applications. Engineered around Tier III-equivalent high-availability principles, SYD1 incorporates resilient electrical and mechanical infrastructure intended to support continuous operations and maintain service availability during maintenance or infrastructure events. A dedicated on-site 132kV primary electrical substation is planned to connect the facility directly with the Endeavour Energy high-voltage network, providing substantial electrical capacity for the campus. Static UPS systems and 47 standby emergency diesel generators are incorporated to provide additional electrical resilience and backup capability. The cooling infrastructure combines closed-loop precision cooling with readiness for direct-to-chip liquid cooling, allowing the facility to accommodate higher-density computing environments and AI workloads with demanding thermal requirements. Carrier-neutral fiber infrastructure is also planned to provide diverse connectivity paths into Sydney’s major internet exchange points and telecommunications networks. Through its substantial IT capacity, high-voltage electrical connection, resilient backup systems, advanced cooling architecture, and strategic location within Western Sydney’s digital infrastructure cluster, SYD1 is positioned to contribute significantly to Microsoft’s expanding hyperscale and AI computing infrastructure in Australia.
