Mediterra Barcelona: 12MW AI-Ready Edge-Hyperscale Hub

Status: Launched / Site Acquired (Feb 20, 2026)   |   Location: Strategic site in Catalonia, near Barcelona

Project Overview

The Mediterra Catalonia 1 (BCN1) project, officially launched on February 20, 2026, marks a strategic pivot for Southern Europe’s digital infrastructure. While the "FLAP" markets (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, and Paris) face extreme power constraints, Mediterra is capitalizing on Spain’s booming digital economy and its role as a Mediterranean connectivity gateway.

The facility is located in a high-demand sub-market of Barcelona, providing 12 MW of total power with an initial 8 MW of IT capacity. What sets BCN1 apart is its "increment-ready" design; capacity is delivered in 1.3 MW modules, allowing hyperscalers and AI startups to scale their deployments with granular precision. This modularity is essential for the AI era, where power requirements can shift rapidly from traditional cloud computing to high-density GPU workloads.

Technically, BCN1 is engineered to meet the cooling demands of modern AI. Recognizing that rack densities are now crossing the 30kW–50kW threshold, Mediterra has integrated support for Direct-to-Chip (DTC) liquid cooling from day one. This makes the Catalonia site one of the few premium, carrier-neutral facilities in the region capable of hosting next-generation AI accelerators without specialized retrofitting.

Connectivity is the project’s second "superpower." Barcelona is currently seeing a tenfold increase in submarine cable capacity, with the city serving as a critical landing point for cables connecting Europe to Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Mediterra’s site is positioned to act as a high-performance "on-ramp" to this global fiber backbone, offering ultra-low latency for financial trading, AI inference, and content delivery across the Mediterranean basin.

As of today, Mediterra has secured the necessary permits and the 12 MW connection, with groundbreaking scheduled for the coming months. In a market where "ready-to-build" power is the most valuable currency, BCN1 is poised to become the cornerstone of Catalonia's bid to become a top-tier European digital hub
