Meta Prometheus: 1GW AI Data Center New Albany Ohio
Status: Under Construction (Superstructure phase) | Location: New Albany, Ohio, USA
Project Overview
First announced as part of Meta Platforms’ ambitious “AI Supercycle” strategy, Project Prometheus is one of the most powerful digital infrastructure projects ever built. As of March 2026, construction is nearing completion on the first three buildings of a planned five-building hyperscale data center complex. Once fully completed, the facility will represent a massive leap in artificial intelligence infrastructure and is designed to support some of the world’s largest AI training workloads.
What makes Project Prometheus unique is its enormous energy demand. The campus is expected to require more than 1 gigawatt (GW) of power at a single site, making it the first privately funded data center in the world to operate at this scale. To manage this huge power requirement without putting stress on the public electricity grid, Meta partnered with The Williams Companies to build a $1.6 billion on-site natural gas power generation system and pipeline infrastructure. This setup operates as a “behind-the-meter” energy system, meaning the power is generated directly at the facility rather than drawn from the public grid. This ensures stable, uninterrupted electricity for continuous AI training operations.
The data center is specifically designed to support next-generation artificial intelligence models such as Llama 4. Training these models requires extremely large clusters of GPUs running continuously for weeks or months. To strengthen its long-term power supply, Meta also secured a landmark nuclear power agreement in January 2026, which will provide additional clean and reliable electricity to supplement the natural-gas generation system.
