Vantage JNB1: 80MW Hyperscale Data Center Johannesburg
Status: Phase 1 Operational / Phase 2 & 3 Under Construction | Location: Johannesburg, Waterfall City
Project Overview
The Vantage JNB1 campus, developed by Vantage Data Centers, is one of the most significant digital infrastructure projects in Africa. First launched in July 2022, the campus represents a $1 billion flagship investment in South Africa’s rapidly growing data center market. The facility is located in the modern Waterfall City business district between Johannesburg and Pretoria, an area that has quickly become one of the country’s most important technology and commercial hubs. Designed to support hyperscale cloud providers, enterprise companies, and regional digital platforms, the campus plays a critical role in strengthening Africa’s digital ecosystem and expanding local cloud capacity.
As of March 2026, the Vantage JNB1 campus is entering the final stages of its expansion phase. This growth accelerated after a strategic 50:50 joint venture partnership was announced in March 2025 between Vantage Data Centers and South African real estate developer Attacq Limited. Attacq is the primary developer behind the broader Waterfall City district and brought deep local infrastructure expertise and land development capabilities to the project. The partnership enabled additional capital investment and accelerated construction timelines, ensuring the campus could meet the rapidly increasing demand for cloud and digital services across Southern Africa.
One of the key results of this collaboration was the funding of an 111,546 square foot expansion to the campus. This expansion was designed to accommodate new hyperscale customers and enterprise clients who require large volumes of computing power and secure data storage. Demand for such infrastructure has surged in recent years due to the rapid adoption of cloud computing, digital banking, e-commerce, artificial intelligence workloads, and streaming services across the African continent.
