The Microsoft Bornasco Data Center Campus, located along Via dei Pioppi and Via Olivetti, formerly Via Rimembranze, in Bornasco, Italy, represents an important expansion of Microsoft’s Italy North Azure cloud region. Situated south of Milan in the Province of Pavia, the multi-building hyperscale campus is strategically positioned within one of Northern Italy’s most important technology and telecommunications corridors. The development is engineered to provide approximately 65.0 MW of gross utility power capacity and 50.0 MW of critical IT load, supporting enterprise cloud availability zones, generative artificial intelligence processing, high-performance computing, and sovereign digital workloads across Italy and Southern Europe. Electrical infrastructure is supplied through dedicated high-voltage substation connections involving Terna and E-Distribuzione, with resilience supported by static 2N and Block N+1 uninterruptible power supply systems and emergency generator units. These systems provide multiple layers of electrical protection for critical computing infrastructure and help maintain continuous service during grid disturbances or maintenance events. Thermal management combines direct-air free-cooling chiller technology with direct-to-chip liquid cooling systems, enabling efficient heat removal from high-density GPU servers and other accelerated computing equipment while taking advantage of favorable ambient conditions when available. Located within the broader Milan digital connectivity belt, the campus benefits from access to extensive telecommunications infrastructure and major network exchange ecosystems. Subterranean dark-fiber entry vaults and dual carrier-neutral meet-me rooms provide diverse connectivity options for cloud customers and network operators, while low-latency connections to the Milan Internet Exchange support efficient regional and international data traffic. Multi-layered zero-trust physical security controls provide continuous protection for critical infrastructure, customer environments, and restricted operational areas. The Bornasco campus therefore strengthens Microsoft’s Azure footprint in Italy and supports the region’s growing demand for cloud, AI, and sovereign digital infrastructure.
