Microsoft Project Orizaba Queretaro: $1.3B AI Cloud Region

Status: Operational / Phase 2 Expansion (April 2026)   |   Location: Queretaro Metropolitan Area

Project Overview

Project Orizaba stands as a central pillar of Microsoft’s “Innovate for Mexico” initiative, representing a $1.3 billion investment aimed at accelerating the country’s digital transformation and strengthening sovereign cloud capabilities. Designed to deliver local data residency and ultra-low latency, the region enables Mexican enterprises to modernize operations while meeting regulatory and compliance requirements. Architecturally, the deployment consists of three fully independent Availability Zones, each equipped with dedicated power, cooling, and networking infrastructure to ensure high availability, redundancy, and resilience for mission-critical workloads.

As of 2026, the facility has increasingly pivoted toward AI-intensive use cases, reflecting rising demand for advanced analytics, automation, and machine learning across industries such as manufacturing, logistics, and cross-border trade. The infrastructure plays a key role in supporting evolving international customs frameworks, particularly under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), where real-time data processing and compliance verification are becoming essential. From a sustainability perspective, Microsoft has incorporated circular economy principles into the design, relying primarily on air cooling for most of the year to significantly reduce water consumption in a region facing growing water stress.
