Microsoft Cloud Sumatra: 200MW Tier IV Hyperscale Facility
Status: Under Construction / Commissioning Phase | Location: West Java Industrial Corridor
Project Overview
The Microsoft Cloud Sumatra project represents a cornerstone of the "Berdayakan Ekonomi Digital Indonesia" initiative, marking Microsoft’s first sovereign cloud region in the country. This hyperscale development is designed to provide world-class cloud services, including Azure, Microsoft 365, and advanced AI infrastructure, to one of the fastest-growing digital economies in Southeast Asia (Dale, 2025). The project is situated within the industrial heartland of West Java, strategically chosen for its proximity to major subsea cable landing stations and robust utility corridors. As hyperscalers pivot toward "Sovereign AI," this facility ensures that Indonesian data remains within national borders, complying with local data residency regulations while offering ultra-low latency for local enterprises (Dale, 2025). Architecturally, the facility utilizes a modular "Gen 7" design, allowing for rapid scaling of compute capacity. A critical focus of the Sumatra project is its integration with the local power grid, utilizing a co-design approach to manage the massive electrical demand estimated to reach up to 200MW at peak buildout (Bashir, 2026). The site is engineered to support liquid cooling for high-density GPU clusters, specifically tailored for generative AI training and inference. Beyond technical specifications, the project is a multi-billion dollar investment that includes a commitment to train over 840,000 Indonesians in digital skills. By providing local access to Microsoft's global cloud backbone, the Sumatra project serves as a catalyst for digital transformation across government, finance, and telecommunications sectors in the region (Dale, 2025).
