NEXTDC S7/OpenAI AI Campus (OpenAI for Australia Initiative)

Status: Major Partnership Announced / Planning & Development   |   Location: Eastern Creek, Western Sydney, Australia

Project Overview

The NEXTDC S7/OpenAI AI Campus in Western Sydney is set to be one of the most advanced and power-intensive data center developments in the Southern Hemisphere. Valued at approximately A$7 billion, this facility is the central pillar of the "OpenAI for Australia" initiative, marking the company's first major infrastructure investment in the Asia-Pacific region. It is explicitly designed not just as a data center, but as a sovereign AI infrastructure hub and a large-scale GPU Supercluster to power advanced AI models.

The campus will eventually host up to 550 Megawatts (MW) of IT load, which would make it one of the largest single data center sites in the world. Its design is driven by the extreme demands of AI and High-Performance Computing (HPC), necessitating cutting-edge thermal management. A key innovation is the mandatory use of new liquid cooling technologies, ensuring the high-density GPU racks are cooled efficiently without requiring ongoing potable drinking water. This addresses a critical environmental concern faced by data centers in drier regions.

In line with global corporate and Australian government mandates, the entire operation is committed to using 100% renewable energy, secured through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for new solar and wind sources. Furthermore, the facility is engineered to meet Australia's stringent Security of Critical Infrastructure (SOCI) framework, guaranteeing the highest standards of resilience and security for both government and financial sector clients.

By partnering with OpenAI, NEXTDC is establishing a foundation that will not only meet the current explosion in AI demand but also significantly upskill the Australian workforce and cement the country's position as a global leader in AI development and deployment. The first phase is currently targeting delivery in the back half of 2027.
