Status: Operational | Location: Greater Chicago Area, Illinois, USA
The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Chicago Region is Oracle's strategic response to the growing demand for secure, high-performance cloud services in the U.S. Midwest, a major global innovation and enterprise hub. Launched in December 2022, the region is Oracle's fourth commercial cloud region in the United States and is central to its goal of providing a distributed cloud architecture with services available globally and locally.
The Chicago region is designed specifically to cater to a demanding customer base, which includes over 20% of the Fortune 500 and a significant portion of U.S. manufacturing and financial derivatives markets. Its primary technical strength lies in its architecture: it features a minimum of three Availability Domains (ADs), which are separate, fault-tolerant data center groupings connected by a high-speed, low-latency network. This design allows customers to build and run highly resilient, distributed applications that provide continuous uptime and robust disaster recovery capabilities by leveraging other OCI regions (e.g., Ashburn, Phoenix, San Jose).
A key factor in its strategic placement is data residency and compliance. By locating the cloud region in the U.S. Midwest, Oracle enables customers to keep their critical data within the region, addressing local regulatory and compliance requirements while improving latency for Midwest-based users. Furthermore, the Chicago area hosts an existing Oracle Cloud Region with DISA Impact Level 5 authorization, allowing it to support U.S. government organizations with sensitive data processing needs.
In line with global corporate sustainability goals, Oracle has committed to powering the new Chicago region with 100% renewable energy by 2025. This effort is part of a broader commitment to reduce the environmental impact of its rapidly expanding data center footprint worldwide. The region offers a comprehensive suite of over 100 OCI services, including the flagship Oracle Autonomous Database, demonstrating its commitment to delivering full public cloud capabilities to the enterprise-rich Midwest market.
