AirTrunk SYD2

Status: Phase 4 Construction/Commissioning   |   Location: Sydney North, New South Wales, Australia

Project Overview

The AirTrunk SYD2 Campus, also known as the Sydney North Data Centre, is a flagship hyperscale facility developed by AirTrunk to meet the rapidly accelerating demand from major global public cloud providers in the Asia-Pacific region. Strategically located in Sydney's northern suburbs (Lane Cove West), it offers a critical presence within a major cloud availability zone and provides convenient access to the Sydney CBD. SYD2's design and scale cement AirTrunk's leadership in the Australian data center market.

The campus is engineered for massive scale and efficiency, characteristics essential for hyperscale customers. The total final IT load capacity is planned to exceed 120 MW, making it one of the largest single-campus data centers in the Asia-Pacific outside of China. The sheer size of the facility is supported by a dedicated 200 MVA 132kV substation, one of the largest in New South Wales, ensuring a highly reliable and cost-effective power supply.

A key focus of the SYD2 development is sustainability and energy efficiency. The facility is designed to achieve an industry-low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15. This is accomplished through several innovations, including a cutting-edge cooling solution that leverages high temperature air-cooled chillers and free cooling technology, which also significantly reduces water consumption—reportedly up to 90% less water annually than traditional cooling methods. This commitment to efficiency aligns with the environmental goals of its large technology clients.

The project has been deployed in multiple phases to match customer growth. The first phase opened in March 2021, and AirTrunk has consistently pursued rapid expansion, with the final two phases (a 70 MW expansion) commencing in 2023, expected to be completed in 2024 to reach the full 120+ MW capacity. The campus is carrier neutral, ensuring customers have diverse and flexible network connectivity options. The significant investment, exceeding $1 billion, underscores the facility’s strategic importance as critical digital infrastructure in the region, supporting the ongoing growth of cloud and AI services.
