Project Summary

Starwood Project Tamarack Data Center West Columbia Mason County West Virginia 2GW

Status: Proposed / High-Impact Certification Approved   |   Location: 38.983616

Project Overview

The Starwood Project Tamarack Data Center is a proposed $12.0 billion high-density AI and hyperscale cloud campus in West Columbia, Mason County, West Virginia, designed to support some of the most power-intensive computing workloads in the emerging artificial intelligence infrastructure market. Developed by Starwood Digital Ventures, the project is engineered to access up to 2.16 GW of power directly from Appalachian Power and American Electric Power (AEP) high-voltage transmission infrastructure, giving the campus a substantial electrical foundation for large-scale computing deployment. The planned power access is particularly significant for AI infrastructure, where dense GPU clusters and accelerated computing systems can require considerably more electricity than conventional enterprise data centers. The campus is purpose-built for ultra-high-density GPU clusters, frontier AI workloads and hyperscale cloud computing, reflecting the industry's shift toward facilities capable of supporting increasingly intensive computing requirements. A major element of the development is its planned closed-loop, waterless liquid cooling system, designed to eliminate continuous municipal water draw while providing thermal management for high-density computing equipment. This approach can reduce dependence on conventional water-intensive cooling infrastructure and is particularly relevant as AI data centers increase rack densities and generate greater heat loads. The project's location in West Virginia also places it within the broader Appalachian power market, where access to high-voltage transmission infrastructure can be an important factor in developing large-scale computing campuses. With a proposed investment of $12.0 billion and power access reaching 2.16 GW, Tamarack is structured as a large-scale hyperscale platform rather than a conventional single-building data center. By combining substantial transmission capacity, advanced liquid cooling and an AI-focused design, the development is positioned to accommodate future generations of high-performance computing. If developed as planned, the Tamarack campus could become a significant addition to West Virginia's digital infrastructure landscape while supporting the growing power and computing requirements of AI and hyperscale cloud services.
