Project Overview

The Upper Mount Bethel Data Center Campus is a proposed $5.0+ billion hyperscale and AI supercomputing mega-campus spanning approximately 754 acres along River Road in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Developed by Slate Belt Holdings LLC, a partnership between Talen Energy and River Pointe Logistics, the master plan envisions up to 24 data center buildings with as much as 2 GW of gross power capacity, giving the project the scale to support multiple generations of high-density computing infrastructure. The substantial power capacity is particularly relevant to artificial intelligence and supercomputing workloads, where large GPU clusters require significant and continuously available electricity. A major infrastructure advantage is the campus's access to local PPL Electric transmission infrastructure together with nearby Talen generation assets, creating a strong power foundation for phased hyperscale development. The master plan is structured around multiple data center buildings, allowing capacity to be deployed progressively as demand for AI, cloud and accelerated computing increases. Cooling is another important consideration, with the campus incorporating closed-loop cooling systems designed to reduce reliance on regional water resources. This approach is particularly significant given the site's proximity to the Delaware River, helping limit the potential impact of large-scale data center cooling operations on surrounding water resources. The 754-acre footprint also provides sufficient space for supporting electrical, cooling and site infrastructure alongside the planned data center buildings. By combining substantial land availability, up to 2 GW of planned power capacity, access to transmission and generation assets, and water-conscious cooling technology, the Upper Mount Bethel campus is positioned as a major potential AI infrastructure hub in Pennsylvania. Its multi-building design could support a broad range of high-performance workloads, including AI training, inference, hyperscale cloud services and scientific computing.
