Visakhapatnam, India, October 8, 2025- Google has unveiled plans to invest USD 10 billion to develop a 1-gigawatt (GW) data center cluster in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This initiative marks the company's first large-scale data center project in India and is set to become the largest of its kind in Asia.

The proposed cluster will consist of three campuses located in Adavivaram, Tarluvada, and Rambilli villages. The project aims to enhance digital infrastructure, support cloud services, and create high-tech employment opportunities in the region. The data centers are expected to be operational by July 2028.

In addition to the data centers, the project will involve the construction of three high-capacity submarine cables, dedicated cable landing stations, and extensive metro fiber networks to ensure robust connectivity. Approximately USD 2 billion of the total investment will be allocated to renewable energy sources to power the facility sustainably.

The Andhra Pradesh government has earmarked nearly 200 acres in Tarluvada for the proposed data center. However, legal challenges have arisen concerning land acquisition. A court case has been filed by an individual claiming to represent farmers who had allegedly received advances for the land. The government suspects foul play, especially since one of the names on the list of claimants is that of a deceased farmer. The compensation package offered includes INR 50 lakh (USD 59,500) per acre, 2.5 times the revised rate of INR 20 lakh (USD 23,800), along with jobs, shops, and housing plots for farmers.

Despite these challenges, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister has directed officials to expedite the process and crack down on individuals obstructing the project. The government remains committed to ensuring the project's success, which is expected to significantly boost Visakhapatnam's IT sector and transform the region into a major technology hub.

This development positions Andhra Pradesh as a key player in India's digital transformation and highlights the state's strategic importance in the global tech landscape.
