Project Overview

The Algoma Data Center is a proposed $1.5+ billion, 400 MW high-density AI and cloud computing campus at the Algoma Steel industrial site, 105 West Street, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, positioning it as a major potential computing infrastructure development in the region. Developed jointly by Algoma Steel and Red Jar Energy Partners, the project is designed to repurpose an established industrial location for next-generation digital infrastructure while taking advantage of existing heavy-industrial electrical capabilities. Its planned 400 MW power capacity is particularly significant for artificial intelligence, where high-density GPU and accelerated-computing deployments require substantially more electricity than conventional enterprise data centers. The development is engineered to leverage high-voltage industrial electrical interconnects and the regional power network managed by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), providing a foundation for large-scale and potentially phased computing deployment. The industrial setting also offers an important infrastructure advantage by placing the data center close to existing power assets rather than requiring an entirely new utility framework to be developed from scratch. The facility is planned around direct-to-chip closed-loop liquid cooling, a technology suited to the concentrated thermal loads generated by high-performance AI hardware and capable of supporting greater rack densities than traditional air-cooling systems. Its energy-efficient architecture is intended to further improve operational efficiency while supporting demanding AI training, high-performance computing and enterprise cloud workloads. The combination of substantial electrical capacity, industrial-site infrastructure and advanced liquid cooling makes the project particularly relevant to the rapidly expanding market for AI factories and high-density computing campuses. By transforming part of an established steel-industry site into a large-scale digital infrastructure hub, the Algoma Data Center could create a new use for existing industrial infrastructure while strengthening Sault Ste. Marie's position in Canada's emerging AI and cloud computing ecosystem. Its planned 400 MW scale also gives the development potential to serve as a significant regional platform for future generations of power-intensive digital workloads.
