Status: Proposed / Early-Stage Planning (IESO Queue Review) | Location: Algoma Steel Industrial Campus, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada
Algoma Steel AI Data Center Campus is a proposed 400 MW high-density AI infrastructure development on industrial land at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, developed jointly with Red Jar Energy Partners to support high-performance computing and artificial intelligence workloads. The project’s scale positions it as a major potential addition to Ontario’s high-density computing infrastructure, with the existing industrial site footprint and heavy industrial grid connection providing an established foundation for large-scale power demand. By leveraging Algoma Steel’s existing electrical infrastructure and industrial land, the development is structured around the conversion of an established industrial setting into dedicated computing capacity rather than relying solely on a new greenfield site. The 400 MW planned capacity is particularly relevant to AI and HPC applications, where compute-intensive workloads require substantial and reliable electrical supply to operate high-density processing infrastructure. The project is currently progressing through the electricity interconnection queue review with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator under Project 2026-881, making grid interconnection a key stage in determining the development’s future power availability. Its location in Sault Ste. Marie also connects the proposed facility to an established industrial energy environment, while the partnership with Red Jar Energy Partners brings an energy-focused development structure to the initiative. As the project advances through the interconnection process, the proposed campus could provide dedicated infrastructure for AI and HPC workloads while making use of an existing industrial site and grid connection. The development therefore represents a planned transition of industrial infrastructure toward large-scale digital computing applications in Ontario.
