Project Overview

Apatura Drumshangie Data Center is a proposed 500 MW greenfield and brownfield hyperscale and artificial intelligence infrastructure development planned on the former Drumshangie opencast coal mine and surrounding moss lands near Greengairs and Airdrie in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Developed by Scottish energy infrastructure specialist Apatura, the project is designed to transform reclaimed industrial land into a large-scale digital infrastructure campus supporting the rapidly expanding requirements of AI, high-performance computing, cloud services, and other power-intensive workloads. The development is expected to comprise multiple data center buildings and high-density data halls, providing a scalable platform for advanced computing deployments while making productive use of land previously associated with coal extraction. A major feature of the proposed campus is its integration with energy infrastructure, including co-located Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and connections to regional renewable electricity resources. These systems could provide additional flexibility and resilience for a facility requiring substantial and continuous power capacity. The campus is also planned to incorporate closed-loop cooling technologies to manage heat generated by high-density computing equipment while limiting water consumption. Heat-export readiness could further improve the site’s overall energy efficiency by creating opportunities to recover and potentially supply waste heat to nearby users or heating networks. Electrical connectivity is another strategic component, with the development positioned to connect directly into SP Energy Networks’ high-voltage grid corridors, providing access to the substantial power infrastructure required for its planned 500 MW capacity. By combining reclaimed industrial land, large-scale grid access, energy storage, renewable power integration, advanced cooling, and heat recovery potential, Drumshangie represents a broader shift toward repurposing former industrial sites for next-generation digital infrastructure. If developed as planned, the campus could establish North Lanarkshire as an important location for sustainable AI and hyperscale computing capacity in Scotland.
