Project Overview

The AWS Project Spectrum facility, located near the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant in Hood County, Texas, represents a major nuclear-powered hyperscale data center development associated with Amazon Web Services and Vistra Corp. Engineered to deliver up to 1.2 gigawatts of total utility capacity and approximately 900 megawatts of critical IT load, the multi-building campus is planned to support high-density artificial intelligence model training, advanced machine learning clusters, cloud computing, and other power-intensive digital workloads. Its energy strategy is centered on access to the Comanche Peak nuclear generating station, with a behind-the-meter nuclear power arrangement providing a low-carbon electricity source for the campus. Additional electrical resiliency is supported through high-voltage grid interconnections with the ERCOT transmission system, modular uninterruptible power supply architectures, redundant distribution systems, and standby emergency generation capabilities. Designed to accommodate extreme computing densities exceeding 100 kW per rack, the facility incorporates advanced thermal-management infrastructure, including closed-loop cooling systems and direct-to-chip liquid cooling technologies intended to reduce water consumption while efficiently removing heat from high-performance computing equipment. The development’s location near established energy and telecommunications infrastructure provides strategic advantages for large-scale digital operations, while diverse subterranean dark-fiber pathways are planned to deliver resilient, low-latency connectivity across major Texas technology corridors, cloud infrastructure networks, and broader North American routes. By combining nuclear energy access, high-density computing infrastructure, advanced cooling technologies, resilient electrical systems, and extensive fiber connectivity, AWS Project Spectrum is positioned as a significant next-generation digital infrastructure platform supporting the rapidly growing requirements of artificial intelligence, hyperscale cloud services, and energy-intensive computing.
