Project Overview
Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) $26 billion multi-campus development in St. Joseph County, Indiana, represents one of the largest digital infrastructure investments in North American history. Building upon an initial $11 billion commitment in New Carlisle, AWS expanded the master plan with an additional $15 billion allocation to deliver 2.4 gigawatts (2.4 GW) of cumulative IT and facility capacity across Northern Indiana. Engineered specifically as a core processing node for generative AI and frontier computing models including custom AWS Trainium/Inferentia silicon and dense NVIDIA GPU clusters the campus provides the underlying infrastructure for high-throughput AI workloads like Project Rainier. The campus footprint spans dozens of modular multi-story data hall structures integrated with dedicated high-voltage substation switchyards. Power distribution is secured through a landmark long-term agreement with Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO), which provides high-voltage transmission interconnects backed by regional renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs). Sustainability and resource conservation are built into the facility design. The site utilizes AWS’s advanced liquid-to-chip direct cooling and dry-cooling closed-loop architectures, minimizing water consumption during peak thermal operational cycles. The development acts as a massive economic anchor for Northern Indiana, supporting over 1,100 direct high-tech roles, thousands of union construction jobs, and partnerships with local technical institutions.
