AWS Wilderness Crossing Data Center Campus Orange County Virginia Amazon Web Services

Status: Approved / Planning Phase   |   Location: Route 3 & Route 20, Locust Grove, Orange County, VA 22508, United States

Project Overview

The AWS Wilderness Crossing Data Center Campus, located near the intersection of Route 3 and Route 20 in Orange County, Virginia, represents a major planned hyperscale digital infrastructure expansion by Amazon Web Services. Situated within the approximately 2,600-acre master-planned Wilderness Crossing development near Locust Grove, the campus is designed to expand AWS cloud infrastructure capacity and accommodate increasingly intensive artificial intelligence training, machine learning, and hyperscale computing workloads. The development is planned around approximately 1,500 MW of gross utility power capacity and 1,200 MW of critical IT load distributed across multiple phased data center facilities. Its electrical infrastructure is expected to rely on high-voltage transmission interconnections with Dominion Energy, supported by static modular uninterruptible power supply systems configured in redundant topologies and emergency standby diesel generators to maintain continuity during grid disruptions. Thermal management incorporates air-cooled free-cooling chillers combined with direct-to-chip liquid cooling loops designed to support high-density GPU and accelerated-computing environments while improving energy efficiency and limiting operational water consumption. The campus is also positioned to become a significant connectivity node within Virginia’s broader digital infrastructure corridor, incorporating planned subterranean dark-fiber entry vaults, carrier-neutral meet-me rooms, and high-capacity fiber connections toward major Northern Virginia network exchanges. Security infrastructure is designed around controlled site access, biometric authentication, continuous surveillance, secured equipment areas, and zero-trust security principles. Through its large-scale electrical capacity, advanced cooling architecture, resilient network connectivity, and phased development strategy, the Wilderness Crossing campus is positioned to support AWS’s long-term cloud and AI infrastructure requirements while strengthening the company’s presence across the rapidly expanding Central Virginia digital infrastructure market.
