Dongara Data Centre, DDC, is an off-grid modular computing facility located at Pilot Energy’s Cliff Head onshore gas plant in Arrowsmith, Western Australia. Developed through a strategic joint partnership between Pilot Energy and UAE based Kala Data, the facility is designed to convert available energy resources at an existing industrial site into computing capacity for high density artificial intelligence and high performance computing workloads. The project uses stranded and flared natural gas associated with existing 4.4 MW gas fired generators to provide electricity for data center operations, creating an integrated energy and digital infrastructure model. Phase 1, with 1 MW of computing capacity, became operational in April 2026 and establishes the initial deployment at the site. The facility incorporates modular liquid immersion cooling to manage the thermal requirements of high density computing equipment while supporting the compact and flexible characteristics of modular data center infrastructure. Starlink satellite backhaul connectivity provides network access for the off-grid facility, reducing dependence on conventional terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure and supporting connectivity from a remote industrial location. The project is planned to scale to 4 MW during 2026, with longer term expansion plans targeting approximately 30 to 35 MW of capacity across the Arrowsmith site and associated local hybrid solar assets. This phased approach allows computing capacity to expand alongside available energy resources and infrastructure. DDC demonstrates how existing industrial energy assets can be integrated with modular computing infrastructure to support AI and HPC workloads outside conventional metropolitan data center markets. Its use of stranded natural gas, liquid immersion cooling, satellite connectivity, and planned renewable energy integration creates an infrastructure model focused on utilizing locally available energy resources while reducing reliance on centralized grid infrastructure. The development also highlights the potential for remote industrial locations to support specialized high density computing applications when reliable power and suitable connectivity can be established.
