Project Overview
EcoDataCenter 1 in Falun, Sweden, is widely recognized as one of the world’s first climate-positive data center campuses, purpose-built to support high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI), and other compute-intensive digital workloads. Designed with sustainability as its foundation, the campus spans approximately 35,000 m² and is undergoing continuous expansion with modular data halls that will increase total utility capacity to approximately 80 MW. A defining feature of the facility is its innovative construction using Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) mass timber supplied by Stora Enso, significantly reducing embodied carbon compared with conventional concrete and steel structures. EcoDataCenter 1 operates entirely on 100% renewable electricity generated from Swedish wind and hydroelectric power, providing customers with a low-carbon platform for cloud computing, AI model training, and enterprise digital infrastructure. The campus also incorporates advanced cooling systems and energy-efficient operational practices to maximise performance while minimising environmental impact. Through direct integration with Falu Energi & Vatten’s combined heat and power (CHP) plant, excess heat generated by the data center is recovered and supplied to the local district heating network while also supporting commercial biofuel pellet manufacturing, creating a highly efficient circular energy ecosystem. By combining renewable energy, sustainable construction materials, innovative heat recovery, and scalable AI-ready infrastructure, EcoDataCenter 1 has established itself as a global benchmark for environmentally responsible, high-density digital infrastructure and next-generation sustainable data center development.
