Equinix MB3 International Business Exchange™ (IBX®)
Status: Operational / Phase 1 Live (April 2026) | Location: Mumbai (Chandivali, Powai), Maharashtra
Project Overview
On April 8, 2026, Equinix officially opened MB3, its first self-built data center in Mumbai, marking a significant milestone in the company’s long-term India expansion strategy and reinforcing the city’s role as the nation’s leading digital interconnection hub. Technically, the $95 million investment was designed to address rapidly rising demand for high-density AI workloads, enterprise colocation, and hybrid multicloud architectures from both domestic and international customers. The five-story facility, located in the Powai area, is strategically positioned within Mumbai’s core technology corridor and is interconnected through dedicated dark fiber links to Equinix’s existing MB1, MB2, and MB4 sites, effectively creating a large unified metro campus with low-latency connectivity and scalable cross-connect capacity. MB3 has been built as an “AI-ready” facility, supporting liquid cooling systems and high-density rack deployments required for modern GPU clusters and advanced compute environments. Sustainability remains a central pillar of the project, with the site operating on 100% renewable energy backed in part by Equinix’s 26.4 MWp solar installation in Yavatmal. With the addition of MB3, Equinix’s cumulative investment in India now exceeds $365 million. The expansion further strengthens Mumbai’s position as the country’s primary gateway for global cloud on-ramps and digital ecosystems, including major platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, Oracle, and other international network providers.
