Equinix SY5: 54MW Sydney AI-Ready Hyperscale IBX
Status: Operational / Phase 3 AI-Density Upgrade (May 2026) | Location: 200 Bourke Road, Alexandria, AU
Project Overview
SY5 is the flagship facility of Equinix’s Sydney campus and stands as the largest interconnected data center site in Australia, playing a central role in the country’s digital infrastructure. As of May 2026, the site has undergone a significant technical overhaul to accommodate next-generation workloads, particularly those driven by artificial intelligence. It now supports advanced cooling technologies such as Direct-to-Chip (D2C) liquid cooling and Rear Door Heat Exchanger (RDHX) systems, both essential for maintaining thermal efficiency in high-density GPU environments. These upgrades enable SY5 to host large-scale AI superclusters, making it especially valuable for Australia’s financial institutions, government agencies, and cloud providers requiring high-performance compute capabilities.
From a connectivity standpoint, SY5 functions as a major international gateway. It serves as a primary on-ramp for key subsea cable systems, including Southern Cross NEXT and Hawaiki, delivering ultra-low latency connectivity between Australia, the United States, and Asia-Pacific markets. This level of interconnection supports mission-critical applications, real-time data exchange, and global cloud integration. In parallel with its performance capabilities, SY5 is aligned with Equinix’s 2026 “Clean Energy” initiative. The facility incorporates high-efficiency UPS systems and participates in a renewable energy purchasing group (REPG), enabling it to match its substantial power consumption with carbon-free energy sources. This combination of scale, connectivity, and sustainability positions SY5 as a cornerstone of Australia’s next-generation digital economy.
