Equinix SY8 Sydney: 4MW High-Density AI Peering Hub

Status: Operational / High-Density Upgrade (April 2026)   |   Location: 74 Mentmore Avenue, Rosebery NSW 2018, Australia

Project Overview

As of April 2026, SY8 represents a critical interconnection node within the Equinix Sydney ecosystem, strategically positioned to serve the Rosebery corridor and surrounding inner-southern suburbs. The facility builds on the legacy design principles introduced by Metronode, which relied heavily on prefabricated modular construction techniques to accelerate deployment and improve scalability; these foundations have since been modernized by Equinix to accommodate next-generation, ultra–high-density AI and cloud computing workloads. Within the broader metropolitan network of Sydney, SY8 functions as a key peering and traffic exchange hub, carrying a substantial share of Australia’s internet backbone interconnectivity and enabling low-latency routing between carriers, cloud providers, and enterprise networks. In 2026, the site is increasingly positioned as an “edge-optimized” facility, engineered to support rack densities reaching approximately 30 kW per rack, making it suitable for AI inference, real-time analytics, and latency-sensitive digital services such as financial trading and media streaming. Its proximity to the Sydney CBD, as well as the Mascot campus cluster (SY1–SY5) near Mascot, Sydney, enhances its role as a highly interconnected bridge within Equinix’s broader Sydney metro fabric, ensuring redundancy, resilience, and ultra-low latency connectivity across Australia’s most critical digital infrastructure zones.
