IonQ QuantumBasel Tempo Hub
Status: Active Expansion / Technology Integration | Location: uptownBasel Campus, Arlesheim/Basel, Switzerland
Project Overview
The IonQ QuantumBasel expansion is a landmark development for the European innovation landscape. Announced as an extension of the existing partnership between IonQ and uptownBasel, Switzerland’s premier innovation campus, this project reached a definitive funding and technology milestone today with an expanded deal value now exceeding $60 million. The core of this project is the deployment of IonQ Tempo, a fault-tolerant, enterprise-grade quantum computer designed to sit alongside classical GPU clusters to solve problems currently impossible for standard binary systems.
The facility functions as IonQ’s European Innovation Center, serving as a strategic sovereign hub for European industry, academia, and government entities. Spanning the technologically advanced uptownBasel campus, the project is engineered to support the rigorous environmental requirements of ion-trap quantum processors—specifically requiring extreme vibration isolation and ultra-precise thermal management. Unlike traditional hyperscale data centers that focus on sheer volume, this "Quantum Hub" focuses on "Logic Gate" complexity and AI model refinement.
The project is highly strategic for Switzerland, reinforcing the nation's position as a global leader in high-tech infrastructure. By integrating quantum systems with AI workloads, the campus allows researchers to explore hybrid quantum-classical algorithms that can optimize everything from pharmaceutical drug discovery to complex logistics and financial risk modeling. With the new agreement extending through 2029, the campus is set to become the most advanced quantum-integrated data center in the EMEA region, providing direct access to next-generation compute power for the entire European ecosystem.
