Lea County Data Center Campus New Era Energy Digital New Mexico AI Hyperscale

Status: Under Development / Planning Phase   |   Location: Lea County, NM 88240, United States

Project Overview

The Lea County Data Center Campus in Lea County, New Mexico, represents a major planned artificial intelligence and hyperscale digital infrastructure development by New Era Energy and Digital. Located within the energy-rich Permian Basin, the master-planned campus is designed to address the growing electricity requirements associated with high-density computing, AI training, high-performance computing, and hyperscale cloud workloads. The development is planned around approximately 1,000 MW of gross utility power capacity and 800 MW of critical IT load distributed across multiple data center buildings and development phases. Its energy strategy combines localized natural gas generation, carbon capture technologies, regional grid interconnections through Xcel Energy’s Southwestern Public Service Company, and behind-the-meter solar generation to support reliable and resilient electricity delivery. Thermal management is expected to incorporate advanced air-cooled chiller systems alongside direct-to-chip liquid cooling technology capable of supporting high-density GPU servers while reducing water consumption in the arid Southwest environment. The campus is also positioned to become a significant digital infrastructure node within the regional network ecosystem, with planned subterranean dark-fiber entry vaults, dual carrier-neutral meet-me rooms, and high-capacity fiber connections toward major network exchanges in Dallas-Fort Worth and Phoenix. Physical security infrastructure is designed around controlled perimeter access, biometric authentication, surveillance systems, secured equipment zones, and zero-trust security principles. Through its large-scale energy strategy, advanced cooling architecture, extensive connectivity, and phased development model, the Lea County campus is intended to provide scalable infrastructure for increasingly intensive AI and cloud computing requirements while supporting long-term digital infrastructure growth across the US Southwest.
