Project Overview
Meta’s $1 billion Rosemount Data Center represents the tech giant's first major hyperscale facility in Minnesota, anchoring its long-term Midwest computing expansion. Situated on a 280-acre parcel within the historic UMore Park property, the project encompasses nearly 715,000 square feet of mission-critical floor space across its initial phase. Engineered specifically from the ground up to support high-density artificial intelligence workloads, deep learning model training, and real-time social infrastructure processing, the site integrates Meta’s latest hardware designs tailored for high-thermal-density GPU racks. The development brings massive economic momentum to Dakota County, creating over 1,000 peak construction jobs and more than 100 operational positions, including systems engineers, facilities technicians, and security personnel. Meta’s site selection was heavily driven by Minnesota’s robust electrical grid, skilled labor force, and favorable climate for free-air cooling. To support the campus's intense power demands without overloading regional utilities, the facility interfaces directly with Xcel Energy via a newly constructed high-voltage substation. Sustainability is a core pillar of the Rosemount campus architecture. Meta has committed to powering 100% of the site's operations with clean, renewable energy, securing local wind and solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) in partnership with Xcel Energy. Additionally, the building incorporates closed-loop water-free cooling technology that eliminates evaporative water consumption during standard operation, ensuring minimal impact on local aquifers. Upon completion, the Rosemount campus will function as a major processing node in Meta’s global infrastructure matrix, driving enterprise AI capabilities and multi-billion-user platform services.
