Project Overview

The Microsoft Cheyenne Data Center Expansion represents a major multi-campus hyperscale development in Southeast Wyoming, significantly increasing Microsoft’s long-term infrastructure footprint in the region. The company has secured more than 3,200 acres across several strategically located sites, including approximately 200 acres within Bison Business Park, around 3,000 acres of adjacent land, and an additional 385-acre parcel near College Drive. This extensive land position provides Microsoft with substantial room for phased development and future expansion as demand for Azure cloud services, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other high-performance computing workloads continues to accelerate. The Cheyenne campus is expected to support large-scale compute infrastructure designed to deliver reliable, low-latency services to customers across North America while strengthening Microsoft’s broader regional cloud infrastructure network. A key element of the development is its utility strategy, with Microsoft working alongside Black Hills Energy to establish customized power and infrastructure frameworks capable of supporting the significant energy requirements associated with hyperscale and AI computing. The project also incorporates advanced cooling technologies designed to operate without consuming water during normal operations, helping reduce pressure on local water resources and improving the facility’s environmental efficiency.
