Project Overview

The Microsoft Donnacona Data Center is a major hyperscale cloud and AI infrastructure facility developed by Microsoft Corporation in Donnacona, Québec, Canada. Located within the Parc Industriel de Donnacona in the Portneuf Regional County Municipality, approximately 40 kilometers west of Québec City, the facility forms part of Microsoft’s broader cloud infrastructure expansion across the Greater Québec Region. The campus is planned to provide an estimated 40 MW of critical IT load capacity, supporting Microsoft’s growing requirements for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, enterprise applications and data-intensive workloads. The facility is designed around Tier III-equivalent availability principles, with resilient infrastructure intended to support continuous operations and scalable deployment. Its location in Québec provides access to Hydro-Québec’s predominantly renewable hydroelectric electricity system, offering a low-carbon energy foundation for large-scale digital infrastructure. The data center incorporates modular, high-density server architectures designed to accommodate evolving compute requirements, while advanced thermal management systems support efficient heat removal from increasingly dense IT environments. The infrastructure is also designed with readiness for liquid-to-chip cooling technologies, allowing the facility to accommodate demanding AI and accelerated-computing workloads as rack densities increase. Multiple network and fiber connectivity paths are planned to support integration with Microsoft Azure’s global network and the wider Montréal–Québec digital corridor. With its strategic location, renewable electricity access, scalable computing architecture and strong network connectivity, the Donnacona facility represents an important component of Microsoft’s expanding Canadian cloud and AI infrastructure footprint.
