Project Overview

Microsoft Grevenbroich Data Center is a major hyperscale and artificial intelligence digital infrastructure project planned on an approximately 23-hectare parcel along Landesstraße 361 in Grevenbroich, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The development forms the fourth node of Microsoft’s expanding AI cloud region in the Rhineland coal phase-out zone, complementing announced facilities in Bedburg, Bergheim, and Elsdorf. The campus is designed to provide an initial 200 MW grid capacity, with long-term expansion potential of up to 1 GW, creating substantial infrastructure for hyperscale cloud services, artificial intelligence workloads, enterprise applications, and other high-performance computing requirements. Its location within the Rhineland region supports the transformation of former coal-intensive industrial areas toward technology and digital infrastructure development. The facility is planned with sustainable cooling technologies, including closed-loop liquid cooling and advanced air-cooling systems, designed to eliminate evaporative water consumption during operations and reduce dependence on local water resources. Direct integration with the local high-voltage transmission grid is planned to support the substantial electricity requirements associated with large-scale cloud and AI computing. The expandable power architecture also provides flexibility for future capacity additions as demand for AI processing and cloud services increases. Through its combination of substantial land availability, high-voltage grid access, advanced cooling systems, and scalable power infrastructure, the Grevenbroich campus is designed to strengthen Microsoft’s cloud and AI infrastructure presence in the Rhineland while supporting the region’s broader economic transition.
