Project Overview

The Microsoft Prison Road Campus, located at 960 Prison Road in Boydton, Virginia, represents a major hyperscale data center development within Microsoft’s established Southern Virginia digital infrastructure footprint. The campus comprises multiple multi-story data center buildings, including facilities identified as LVL01 through LVL07 and additional planned phases, designed to support Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure, availability zone capacity, artificial intelligence clusters, machine learning applications, and other high-density computing workloads. Electrical infrastructure is supported through high-voltage utility interconnections with Dominion Energy, complemented by static modular uninterruptible power supply systems configured in redundant 2N and Block N+1 architectures. Emergency standby diesel generators provide additional backup capacity to maintain critical operations during utility disruptions. Thermal management incorporates high-efficiency air-cooled chiller systems integrated with direct-to-chip liquid cooling loops designed to accommodate increasingly dense GPU server racks and accelerated computing environments while reducing cooling-related water consumption. Strategically located within Mecklenburg County, the Prison Road campus forms part of Microsoft’s broader Southern Virginia data center ecosystem and benefits from established regional telecommunications infrastructure. Network architecture includes subterranean dark-fiber entry vaults, dual carrier-neutral meet-me rooms, diverse internal fiber pathways, and high-speed connectivity routes linking the campus with regional network exchange and interconnection hubs. Physical security is designed around controlled perimeter access, biometric authentication, continuous surveillance, secured equipment areas, and zero-trust security principles to protect critical infrastructure and customer workloads. The campus is positioned to provide scalable computing capacity as demand for cloud services and AI workloads continues to increase. Through its multi-building architecture, resilient electrical systems, advanced cooling infrastructure, high-capacity connectivity, and layered security controls, the Microsoft Prison Road Campus strengthens the company’s Southern Virginia infrastructure platform and supports the continued expansion of Azure and AI computing services.
