Project Overview

The Mihta Askiy Data Center Project is a massive Indigenous-led power and digital infrastructure development planned at the former Carmon Creek industrial site, approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Peace River in Northern Alberta, Canada. Led by Cree Ative Datacenter Corp GP and Mihta Askiy Datacenter LP in partnership with the Woodland Cree First Nation (WCFN), the project is designed to repurpose legacy energy and industrial assets while establishing a sovereign, high-density computing campus on traditional Indigenous lands. Master-planned to provide approximately 650.0 MW of critical IT load capacity, the development is positioned to support some of the most energy-intensive computing applications, including artificial intelligence model training, machine learning clusters, high-performance computing (HPC), and other accelerated digital workloads. A central component of the development is its behind-the-meter energy strategy, which incorporates an on-site natural gas-fired power generation plant designed to utilize existing infrastructure associated with the former industrial site. This approach is intended to provide dedicated energy resources for the computing campus and support the substantial electricity requirements of large-scale AI infrastructure. Engineered to Tier III-equivalent high-availability standards, the facility incorporates resilient electrical systems, including 2N static UPS redundancy and emergency standby generation, to improve operational continuity and protect critical computing workloads. Advanced liquid-to-chip direct cooling technology is planned to manage the high thermal densities generated by modern AI accelerators, GPU clusters, and other high-performance computing systems, while improving cooling efficiency across the campus. Dedicated dark fiber connections are also planned to provide high-capacity and secure communications links into Alberta’s provincial optical networks and transcontinental telecommunications backbones. By combining dedicated on-site generation, large-scale computing capacity, advanced cooling, resilient infrastructure, and Indigenous-led development, Mihta Askiy is positioned as a distinctive digital infrastructure project that could connect Northern Alberta’s existing energy resources with the rapidly expanding requirements of AI and high-performance computing.
